Tracking Affiliate Orders via The Phoneby Ben EllisAffiliates hate the telephone. It breaks the 'smooth' online progress of a cookie tracking from first-click, through the merchant site and to the Holy Grail which is the confirmation page where the affiliates hardwork is paid off. The trouble with the phone is that the cookie is suddenly of no use and is ignored. If a merchant's website requires a phone call to place an order then the only way an affiliate can get a commission is if the merchant asks the customer if the url has a code number in it and this can get confusing which isn't very good for a slick phone sales operation. Online sales are not always possible and not always the best way to sell your product or service, so can affiliate programs and telephone point-of-sale work together in the affiliate's best interest? Yes they can, and here's three ways a merchant can do this. 1) Use Cookie Based Special Offers The cookie is used for tracking but it's power doesn't have to end when the phone is dialled. A merchant can use a cookie to display a special offer to the customer. This special offer will use the affiliate's ID number as a 'Bonus Code' that the customer needs to quote when on the phone inorder to redeem it. We're currently using this method at http://www.myaffiliateprogram.com. If you click this 'normal' link to MyAP - http://www.myaffiliateprogram.com - then you'll see underneath the phone number in the grey box to the left, there is no offer (unless you already have a MyAP cookie on your computer). But if you click this affiliate link to MyAP - http://www.myaffiliateprogram.com/index.asp?id=1001 - you'll now see there is a special offer under the phone number where you can save $149 if you quote a number. That number being the affiliate's ID. This then changes the dynamic of the affiliate/bonus code. The customer is most definately going to be quoting this code as they'll get a saving, it's not some arbitrary code that doesn't benefit them. Also, our affiliates have an advantage over us because we are not offering this saving to regular customers, only to affiliate referred customers. 2) Use a Phoneback Form You can use a phoneback form, like we do here - http://www.myaffiliateprogram.com/contactus_form.asp, to enable you to phone customers back. In this form you can include the affiliate ID as a hidden field, so when you receive the form you'll know if they've been referred by an affiliate or not. You could incentivize this form by stating that all customers that use it are entered into a draw or receive a special offer.
